UK (Liverpool standard) October 07, 2026 – Reform UK MP Sarah Pochin has denied claims that she purchased a third property after acquiring an £800,000 second home on the Welsh island of Anglesey. The controversy emerged following reports that the MP for Runcorn and Helsby completed the purchase just two days after raising parliamentary concerns about the impact of second home ownership on rural and coastal communities.

What Is the Sarah Pochin Second Home Controversy?

As reported by Nadeem Badshah of AOL, Sarah Pochin completed the purchase of a Grade-II listed property on the southern coast of Anglesey (Ynys Môn) jointly with her husband, Jonathan. According to the Will Hayward newsletter, Pochin submitted a written question to Housing Minister Matthew Pennycook on 15 June 2026, asking “what assessment he has made of the potential impact of second home ownership on housing availability in coastal and rural communities”.

Pennycook replied: “Excessive concentrations of short-term lets and second homes impact on the availability and affordability of homes for local residents to buy and rent, as well as local services.” Land Registry records show that Pochin and her husband completed their Anglesey purchase two days later on 17 June and have since submitted plans for alterations to the property.

A Guardian investigation, as cited by UKPOL, revealed that the couple retain ownership of another home in Cheshire while now holding the Anglesey property. The Guardian did not allege that Pochin’s purchase breached any law or parliamentary rule, but highlighted the timing in relation to her parliamentary question.

How Has Sarah Pochin Responded to the Claims?

Sarah Pochin denied buying a third property, stating she already owns a second home on the island. According to the Liverpool Echo, Pochin rejected the criticism as “a leap too far, and twisting words”, clarifying that she did not purchase an additional property beyond what she already owned.

Reform UK did not respond to requests for comment from multiple media outlets including AOL and the Guardian. The party has previously dismissed allegations against Pochin as “politically motivated attacks”, as first reported by the Liverpool Echo.

What Do Local Leaders Say About Second Homes in Anglesey?

Robin Wyn Williams, the deputy leader of Cyngor Sir Ynys Môn (Anglesey County Council), told AOL: “It has a longer-term impact on things like the provision of schools and other local services. That community spirit gets killed off.” He added: “We’ve seen it in the likes of Rhosneigr, where it appears to have lost its identity because it is very much a village of second homes in the main these days.”

Williams continued:

“It tends to be more middle-aged and older people, and that then can bring with it pressures on our adult services. Obviously then that has an impact on the situation whereby families are being displaced from certain parts of the island. And then you just end up in a situation where you have fewer children in the community and that has an impact on schools.”

As of March 2026, Anglesey County Council recorded 2,635 furnished properties that were not somebody’s sole or main residence. The local authority introduced a council tax premium on second homes in 2016, initially set at 25% on top of the standard rate, which has since risen incrementally to the current 100% premium to address local housing affordability.

Who Is Sarah Pochin?

Sarah Pochin became Reform UK’s first female MP after winning the Runcorn and Helsby byelection in May 2025. She previously served as a Conservative mayor and a local councillor on Cheshire East council, latterly as an independent, before joining Nigel Farage’s party.

According to the Independent, Pochin was previously reprimanded for using her status as a magistrate to influence colleagues. A finding of misconduct was made against Sarah Pochin by the Judicial Conduct Investigations Office (JCIO) in 2018 during her time as a magistrate – a role she held for 20 years. The JCIO found Ms Pochin had used her status as a magistrate to influence the views held by her colleagues in a political context at a meeting.

In September 2026, Pochin told the BBC that all eight of Reform UK’s MPs now had 24-hour security following the death of Ann Widdecombe, the former Tory minister who was an immigration and justice spokeswoman for Reform when she was killed at her home in July.

Background of the Second Home Development

The controversy surrounding Sarah Pochin’s property purchase comes amid ongoing debates about second home ownership in Wales, particularly in Anglesey. The island had the largest increase in holiday home users among local authorities from 2011 to 2021, according to the Office for National Statistics.

Critics have argued that second homes and short-term holiday rentals can adversely affect local communities by reducing housing supply, inflating property prices and putting a strain on infrastructure. The Welsh Government has been considering additional measures to address the issue, including potential changes to planning laws and taxation.

Anglesey’s position as a popular destination for second home buyers has created tension between property investors and local residents seeking affordable housing. The 100% council tax premium represents one of the highest rates in Wales, reflecting the severity of the issue in the region.

Prediction: How This Development May Affect Reform UK and Rural Housing Policy

This development is likely to have several implications for Reform UK’s positioning on housing policy and rural community issues. The timing of Pochin’s purchase relative to her parliamentary question may be used by political opponents to question the party’s consistency on second home policies.

For rural communities in Wales and England, the controversy may intensify scrutiny of politicians’ personal property holdings while they debate housing affordability measures. Local authorities may face increased pressure to implement stricter regulations on second home ownership and short-term lets.

The incident could also influence public perception of Reform UK’s commitment to addressing housing challenges in coastal and rural areas. Voters in constituencies affected by second home concentrations may weigh politicians’ personal circumstances against their policy positions more carefully in future elections.
