Toxteth Crime (Liverpool standard) October 07, 2026 – A man has been arrested after two members of staff were assaulted during a failed robbery at an Essar petrol station in Toxteth. Merseyside Police were called to the site on Sefton Street shortly after 3pm on Tuesday 6 October 2026, after reports that two men had attacked employees during an attempted theft.
As reported by the Liverpool Echo, a male member of staff in his 40s was repeatedly punched and suffered facial injuries, requiring hospital treatment, while a female colleague was pushed during the incident. The suspects attempted to enter an office inside the forecourt but were unsuccessful and left without taking anything.
The three offenders fled the scene in a green Ford Puma with no number plates, driven by a third man. The vehicle was driven onto nearby Hill Street, where it was set on fire close to a block of flats. A cordon was erected and remained in place into the evening as detectives and scientific support officers examined the scene.
Who has been arrested and what are the charges?
Merseyside Police confirmed that a 41-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of robbery and arson in connection with the attempted robbery. A force spokesman said:
“We have arrested a 41-year-old man on suspicion of robbery and arson following an attempted robbery at a service station in Toxteth yesterday, Tuesday 6 October.”
The same statement added:
“Shortly after 3pm it was reported two males pushed a female member of staff and repeatedly punched a male colleague at the Essar service station on Sefton Street. They attempted to enter an office inside but left empty handed.”
The man has been released on conditional bail while enquiries continue.
What do police want from witnesses?
Detective Chief Inspector Gary Stratton, speaking as quoted by the Liverpool Echo, said: “The offenders in this case have shown a complete disregard for staff who were simply trying to earn an honest living, and left one requiring hospital treatment.” He added that officers were appealing for anyone who saw any part of the incident to come forward.
DCI Stratton continued:
“If you saw a green Ford Puma being driven in a suspicious manner before or after the incident, or three males running from the car in the Hill Street area, we urge you to contact us. We want to bring all three perpetrators to justice and information or footage you provide could be the key to helping bring justice for the victims in this case.”
Police have asked for dashcam or CCTV footage and any other information to be sent via the Merseyside Police social media desk on X or Facebook (@MerPolCC), or reported online via the force website, or by calling 101 quoting incident reference 26000821488. Information can also be given anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or via its website.
What are the suspect descriptions?
Officers have released descriptions of two of the men who entered the petrol station. One suspect is described as a white male, around 5ft 4in tall and of large build, wearing a grey hoodie, dark grey trousers and dark shoes. The second male was described as being around 6ft tall and wearing a dark navy tracksuit. Both had their faces covered at the time of the incident.
Police believe a third man was driving the green Ford Puma used in the getaway. Investigators are keen to speak to anyone who saw the car being driven in a suspicious manner in the Sefton Street or Hill Street areas before or after the attack, or who saw three men running from the vehicle in the Hill Street area.
Background to the development
Attempted robberies at retail and fuel sites in Merseyside periodically prompt high-visibility police responses, particularly when staff are injured and vehicles are set alight nearby. The Essar forecourt on Sefton Street is in a busy urban area of Toxteth, where local businesses and residents have previously raised concerns about crime and anti-social behaviour.
The use of a stolen or unregistered vehicle, the covering of faces and the destruction of the getaway car by fire are tactics that investigators often associate with attempts to avoid identification and forensic tracing. The arrest within 24 hours indicates that early lines of enquiry, including local CCTV and witness accounts, were pursued rapidly by Merseyside Police.
Prediction: how this development may affect local residents and businesses
If further arrests follow and charges are brought, the case is likely to reassure local traders and residents that violent attempts to rob forecourts will be pursued robustly. However, the sight of a burnt-out car near flats on Hill Street and the injury to a worker may heighten short-term anxiety among staff at nearby shops and petrol stations, potentially prompting calls for more visible patrols and improved security measures such as better lighting, cameras and access controls to office areas.
For local businesses, repeated incidents of this kind can affect staffing patterns, with some employers reviewing lone-working policies or cash-handling procedures. For the community, a successful prosecution could act as a deterrent, while ongoing police appeals for footage suggest that public cooperation remains central to resolving similar cases in Toxteth and surrounding neighbourhoods.
