Key Points

  • Two people have lost their lives while a third person sustained serious injuries in two separate house fires that took place in Western Sydney and on the South Coast of New South Wales overnight.
  • The first fatal fire happened in Villawood around 6pm, where an elderly woman in her seventies succumbed to smoke inhalation while another woman in her fifties was saved. Jeremy Fewtrell of Fire and Rescue NSW indicated that the cause of the fire could be cooking and there were no smoke alarms operating.
  • There was also a fire in a mobile home in Greenwell Point near Nowra in the late hours of 10pm that caused the death of an elderly man and injury of another individual.
  • This winter alone has seen 13 deaths out of 856 building fires across the state of New South Wales.

What occurred at the Villawood house fire?

As reported by ABC News, firefighters were called to a residence on Tuncoee Road in Villawood just after 6pm on Wednesday. Fire crews extinguished the blaze and evacuated two occupants, according to NSW Police. A woman in her 50s was rescued from the property, while a second woman, believed to be in her 70s, was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation before being transported to Liverpool Hospital in a critical condition. She died shortly after arrival, police said.

Fire and Rescue NSW Commissioner Jeremy Fewtrell told ABC News that investigators suspected the fire was linked to a cooking incident. He added that no functioning smoke alarm was found in the home, underscoring what he described as the critical need for operational alarms. Investigators worked overnight to determine the exact cause, authorities said.

What happened in the Greenwell Point mobile home fire?

Later that night, at about 10pm, emergency services responded to a fire at a tourist park on Greens Road in Greenwell Point, roughly 15km east of Nowra on the NSW South Coast. Fire and Rescue NSW extinguished the fire and discovered the body of an elderly man inside the mobile home, police said. He has not yet been formally identified.

A second man was treated at the scene for serious burns and smoke inhalation before being taken to hospital in a serious condition, according to NSW Police. The incident is not being treated as suspicious and the investigation is ongoing, authorities said.

What hazards did firefighters face at Greenwell Point?

Illawarra Fire Service officer Anthony Ciccaldo told ABC News that crews encountered several hazards at the Greenwell Point scene, including gas bottles and nearby mobile homes situated only a few metres away. He said teams were able to quickly control the situation upon arrival and prevent the fire from spreading to adjacent properties.

How many fire deaths has NSW recorded this winter?

Commissioner Fewtrell said the two fatalities would resonate deeply with firefighters across the state, ABC News reported. Fire and Rescue NSW noted that this winter has already recorded 13 fatalities from 856 structural fires during the colder months, highlighting a significant increase in deadly incidents this season.

In July, two deaths in one week prompted an urgent winter fire safety warning from Fire and Rescue NSW, with fatal blazes reported in Randwick and Coniston involving residents believed to be in their late 70s. More recently, a house fire in Wiley Park in late July killed three people, according to ABC News. Another fatal fire in Bowen Mountain in April killed two children, as reported by AAP.

What safety warnings have authorities issued?

Commissioner Fewtrell emphasised the importance of working smoke alarms after the Villawood incident, ABC News reported. Fire and Rescue NSW has repeatedly urged households to test alarms, clear cooking areas, and maintain heating equipment safely during winter. The agency’s messaging has stressed that early warning from a functioning alarm can be the difference between escape and tragedy.

Background of the development

The overnight fatalities come amid a broader pattern of winter fire deaths in NSW. Fire and Rescue NSW data cited by ABC News shows 13 deaths from 856 structural fires this winter, with multiple high-profile incidents in recent months. In July, fatal fires in Randwick and Coniston each claimed the life of an elderly resident, prompting the agency to issue a video warning about home fire safety. A triple-fatality fire in Wiley Park in late July and a two-child death in Bowen Mountain in April further underscore the risks posed by residential fires during colder weather.

Fire investigators have previously highlighted cooking, heating appliances, and electrical faults as common causes of winter house fires, while the absence or failure of smoke alarms has been a recurring factor in fatal incidents. The Villawood fire’s suspected link to cooking and the reported lack of a working alarm align with patterns identified in earlier warnings.

Prediction: How this development can affect NSW households and emergency services

The twin fatalities are likely to intensify public attention on home fire safety ahead of the peak winter period, particularly among older residents and those in high-density or caravan park settings. Households may face increased scrutiny from landlords, insurers, and strata managers over smoke alarm compliance and kitchen safety practices, while community groups could expand door-knocking and education campaigns targeting vulnerable residents.

For emergency services, the incidents may reinforce calls for additional resources for prevention programmes, including free or subsidised smoke alarm installations and targeted outreach in tourist parks and mobile home communities. Fire and Rescue NSW may also use the case to advocate for stricter enforcement of alarm maintenance rules, given the commissioner’s emphasis on non-functioning devices in the Villawood fire.
