Merseyside Police said they were called shortly before 02:00 to a report that a black Cupra had come off the road and caused damage to a lamppost on Liverpool Road. A large police scene was established, with a single substantial cordon in place near Ashover Avenue where the main investigation work was taking place.

According to the Liverpool Echo, ECHO reporter Megan Banner, who was at the scene, said debris was scattered across the road and the car appeared to have hit a lamppost on a grassy verge in the middle of Liverpool Road at the junction with Ashover Avenue. Local residents reported being woken by a helicopter flying low over the area at around 02:00.

How extensive were the road closures and bus diversions?

Eleven roads were closed in the area as police managed the incident and carried out their investigation. The closures affected Shellingford Road, uk/local/prescot/">Prescot Road, Liverpool Road, Somerset Road, Back Dovecot Place, Dovecot Place, Taurus Road, Turriff Road, Dinas Lane, Lordens Road and Fincham Road.

On X, Merseytravel said:

“Due to a police incident on East Prescot Road between Finch Lane and Page Moss Dovecot, Arriva service 7, 8, 9, 10, 10A & 10B are diverted via Finch Lane and Princes Drive in both directions. We currently have no timescale for this diversion.”

Bus passengers were warned to expect delays and to check for updates before travelling.

Traffic built up on surrounding routes as drivers sought alternative paths through Huyton and neighbouring districts, with commuters advised to avoid the area while the police operation continued.

What have the police said about the Huyton crash?

Merseyside Police confirmed the incident in an official statement, saying:

“We can confirm that emergency services are currently on Liverpool Road following a serious road traffic collision in Huyton in the early hours of this morning, Friday 24 July.”

In a further message to the public, the force added:

“We apologise and thank you for your cooperation whilst we deal with this incident.” Officers also issued an appeal for information, asking anyone who witnessed the crash or who had relevant CCTV or dashcam footage to come forward.

The police statement read: “If you witnessed this incident or have any information, CCTV or dashcam, please contact us @MerPolCC, 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 with reference log 80 of Friday July 24.”

What do other media outlets report?

The BBC reported that police were called shortly before 02:00 after a car left the road and crashed into a lamp-post on Liverpool Road in Huyton. It noted that a substantial police presence was at the location and that the public was being urged to steer clear of the area while the investigation continued.

The UK Pulse reported that eleven roads in Huyton had been shut after the serious crash in which a car hit a lamp-post on Liverpool Road just before 02:00 BST. Social media posts from Huyton Times reiterated the police account of a black Cupra coming off the road and damaging a lamppost, with a large police scene and road closures in place.

What is known about injuries and the vehicle?

As of the latest updates from police and local media, no details had been released about whether anyone was injured in the crash or how many people were in the car at the time. Merseyside Police had not confirmed the condition of any occupants, nor had they identified the driver or passengers.

The vehicle involved was described consistently as a black Cupra, a performance brand under the SEAT marque. According to the Liverpool Echo’s on-scene reporting, the car came off the road and struck the lamppost on a central grassy verge, causing visible damage to both the vehicle and the street furniture.

Background to the Huyton crash development

Huyton is a residential area in the Metropolitan Borough of Knowsley, on the eastern side of Liverpool, and Liverpool Road is a key local artery connecting several neighbourhoods. Serious collisions on such routes often require prolonged police cordons because investigators must map the scene, photograph evidence and, where necessary, reconstruct the events leading up to the crash.

Merseyside Police routinely close multiple side roads around a serious collision site to preserve evidence and ensure the safety of officers and the public. The use of a police helicopter in the early hours of the morning, as reported by local residents, is consistent with standard practice for major incidents, where aerial support can assist with scene assessment and traffic management.

Prediction: How could this development affect Huyton residents and commuters?

The immediate effect of this incident is significant disruption for people living in and travelling through Huyton, particularly those who rely on Liverpool Road and the surrounding streets for daily commutes, school runs and access to local services. Prolonged road closures and bus diversions can lead to longer journey times, increased congestion on alternative routes and additional pressure on public transport networks.

In the longer term, if the investigation identifies specific risk factors at this location such as road layout, lighting or speed local authorities may consider targeted safety measures. For residents, this could mean changes to signage, traffic calming or street design aimed at reducing the likelihood of similar incidents.

For the wider audience in Knowsley and east Liverpool, the incident may also prompt renewed discussion about road safety, particularly in the early hours when traffic volumes are lower but speeds can be higher. If police later release further details about the circumstances of the crash, that information could influence how local communities and policymakers approach prevention efforts on similar urban roads.
