  • An inquest heard the car fire was likely caused by smoking material coming into contact with ignitable material inside the vehicle.
  • Assistant coroner Jonathan Leach recorded a conclusion of accidental death.
  • A pathologist gave smoke inhalation as Mr Mulryan’s medical cause of death.
  • Mr Mulryan, from County Galway, Ireland, had arrived in England two days before his death and was due to start work as an assistant trainer.
  • He had met his new employer, Adrian Keatley, at a pub in Malton on the evening before his death.
  • Witnesses reported seeing a dark VW Passat with Irish registration plates involved in a collision near the A169 and A64 junction earlier that night.

Liverpool (Liverpool standard) August 25, 2026 — the Hugh Mulryan inquest concluded that the death of the 25-year-old racehorse trainer after a vehicle fire near Malton was accidental. The hearing was told that smoking material probably came into contact with ignitable material inside the car, starting a blaze which later led to Mr Mulryan’s death from smoke inhalation.

Assistant coroner Jonathan Leach recorded an accidental-death conclusion following the inquest at Northallerton. BBC News reported that Hugh Mulryan was found dead in the driver’s seat of his car beside Marishes Lane, near Malton in North Yorkshire, at around 04:30 BST on 16 June 2025.

Mr Mulryan, who was from County Galway in Ireland, had arrived in England two days before his death. He had been due to begin a job as an assistant trainer on the morning he died, according to the BBC News report.

The inquest examined both the origin of the fire and the events during the hours before the vehicle was discovered. The evidence did not establish an exact time when the fire began. However, the fire investigation concluded that the blaze was accidental rather than deliberate.

How did the fire start in Hugh Mulryan’s car?

As reported by BBC News, North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service station manager Anna Atkinson-Spragg investigated the incident and found that the fire had begun accidentally. Her findings indicated that smoking material had probably come into contact with ignitable material, such as fabric or foam within the vehicle.

The report said the fire was likely to have started in a footwell. However, Ms Atkinson-Spragg was unable to determine whether this was the driver’s side or passenger side because the vehicle had been extensively damaged by the blaze.

By the time a crew from Malton arrived shortly after 04:30 BST, the fire was described as burning itself out. The investigation did not establish when the ignition happened, meaning the inquest could not set out a definitive timeline between the start of the fire and the emergency response.

The medical evidence was also central to the hearing. A pathologist’s report gave smoke inhalation as the medical cause of Mr Mulryan’s death. The finding supported the coroner’s conclusion that the fatal incident resulted from the accidental vehicle fire.

What happened before Hugh Mulryan was found?

The inquest heard that Mr Mulryan met Adrian Keatley, his new employer, at the Spotted Cow pub in Malton on the evening of 15 June 2025. In a report submitted to the hearing, Mr Keatley said Mr Mulryan had a packet of cigarettes with him.

Mr Mulryan left the pub at about 22:00 after drinking four pints of Guinness, according to Mr Keatley’s account reported by BBC News. Mr Keatley said that Mr Mulryan did not appear intoxicated and remained coherent.

The hearing was also told that Mr Mulryan had been expected to return to accommodation owned by a friend of a friend. He sent a text message at 21:40 stating that he would shut a gate when he arrived.

A toxicology report found that the alcohol level in Mr Mulryan’s blood was “just over the legal limit” for driving in England and Wales, BBC News reported. This evidence formed part of the inquest record, alongside witness accounts and the fire investigation.

What did witnesses say about a collision near Malton?

The inquest also considered a road collision reported near the A169 and A64 junction at approximately 23:00 on 15 June 2025. Two visitors from Liverpool told the hearing that a dark-coloured Volkswagen Passat with Irish registration plates had been travelling the wrong way around a roundabout before striking their vehicle.

One witness described the driver as a white man in his 20s or 30s. The witness said the driver appeared “very calm overall, very relaxed, perhaps too relaxed”, according to BBC News.

The reported driver then left the scene, retracing the route and travelling north on the A169. The inquest heard this evidence as part of the chronology of events before Mr Mulryan’s vehicle was found on Marishes Lane.

Earlier reporting on the case stated that North Yorkshire Police initially treated Mr Mulryan’s death as unexplained while considering whether there could be a connection with a traffic incident on the night before he died. The full inquest later heard the fire evidence and returned an accidental conclusion.

What is the background to Hugh Mulryan’s death?

Hugh Mulryan was a 25-year-old from County Galway who had travelled to England to take up work in the racing industry. He was due to start as an assistant trainer after arriving in the country only two days before the fatal incident.

His death was first examined at a preliminary inquest hearing in December 2025. At that stage, the medical cause of death had been identified as smoke inhalation, while the inquiry was adjourned ahead of a full hearing into the circumstances of the vehicle fire.

The later inquest considered the fire-service investigation, toxicology evidence, witness accounts from the pub and the reported collision, as well as medical findings. Assistant coroner Jonathan Leach ultimately concluded that Mr Mulryan’s death was accidental.

How could the inquest finding affect Mr Mulryan’s family and the racing community?

For Mr Mulryan’s family and those who knew him in Ireland and the British racing community, the accidental conclusion provides a formal legal finding on the cause and circumstances of his death. It confirms that the fatal fire was assessed as an accident and that smoke inhalation caused his death.

For employers and workers whose roles involve long travel, late working hours or vehicles used as temporary places of rest, the evidence underlines the fire risk associated with smoking materials near combustible surfaces such as vehicle-seat fabric and foam. The inquest finding does not create new safety requirements, but it places the circumstances of this incident on the public record.
