How Did Bury Take Control Against Prescot Cables?

As reported by the Bury Times, Bury made a number of changes from their previous FA Trophy fixture, giving fringe players a chance to start. Testimony Igbinoghene and Murat Aydogan were brought in from the Under-21 squad, while Harrison Aubrey-Williams and Charlie Cox were recalled from their respective clubs. Daniel Adshead made only his second appearance for Bury, having also featured in the previous round, and Dom Telford made his first start since returning to the club.

The Shakers took the lead after only six minutes. According to the Bury Times match report, Igbinoghene won the ball before playing in George Glendon, who spread possession out to Rustam Stepans. Stepans pulled the ball back to Glendon, who finished into the far corner to put Bury 1-0 ahead.

Prescot Cables responded positively and pushed forward in search of an equaliser. The Bury Times reported that former Ramsbottom United players John Murphy and Tony Donaldson both forced saves from Bury goalkeeper Mitch Allen, while Sharif Deans came closest when his left-footed strike struck the crossbar.

Who Scored as Bury Reached FA Trophy Round Two?

Bury doubled their advantage before the break through Dom Telford. The Bury Times reported that a short corner routine involving Daniel Adshead led to the midfielder delivering a cross towards the far corner. Telford may have made the faintest of touches as the ball entered the net, and he was credited with the goal.

Both sides continued to create openings in a first half affected by wet and windy conditions. The Bury Times reported that DJ Pedro missed a chance when played through on goal, while Stepans shot high and wide. At the other end, Jack Loughran had an opportunity for Prescot Cables but shot directly at Allen.

Late in the first half, Stepans was set up by Mo Touray and forced a strong save from Prescot Cables goalkeeper Tony Thompson. Pedro also headed wide from a James Melhado cross as Bury went in at the interval with a 2-0 lead.

What Happened in the Second Half at Gigg Lane?

Prescot Cables began the second half with a clear opportunity to reduce the deficit. The Bury Times reported that, from a corner, Mitch Allen was beaten, but Rustam Stepans cleared the ball off the line to preserve Bury’s two-goal lead.

Substitute Kai Evans later had a corner for the visitors, with the Bury Times noting that he was encouraged to shoot because his previous two goals had come directly from corner kicks. However, Thompson punched away the in-swinger, which the report described as likely intended as a shot on goal.

Bury then took greater control of possession and added a third goal. According to the Bury Times, Stepans sent a cross into the box and the unmarked DJ Pedro stooped low to head home, making it 3-0.

Could Bury Have Won by a Bigger Margin?

Bury created further chances after Pedro’s goal. The Bury Times reported that Stepans cut inside from the right and forced Thompson into an excellent save with a left-footed effort, with the Cables goalkeeper pushing the ball wide.

James Melhado and substitute Tom Carr nearly combined for another goal in a similar manner to Bury’s third. The Bury Times reported that Melhado crossed from the right, but Carr headed wide under pressure from a defender.

Prescot Cables’ best late opportunity fell to former Bury player Josh Gregory. According to the Bury Times, his long-range shot nearly caught out Allen, but the Bury goalkeeper recovered to keep his clean sheet and secure Bury’s passage into the second round.

What Does the Result Mean for Bury?

The win confirms Bury’s place in the second round of the 2026-27 FA Trophy. The fixture was part of the first round proper, played on Saturday, 24 October 2026, at the Salford Van Hire Gigg Lane Stadium.

Match records list the final score as Bury 3, Prescot Cables 0, with the game played at 3pm. Competition records also record an attendance of 1,970 for the tie.

The result followed Bury’s previous FA Trophy tie, in which they drew 3-3 with Gainsborough Trinity before winning 6-5 on penalties. As reported by the National League, Bury had led 3-1 before late goals from Aaron Simpson and Ronnie Kokkinos took the game to a shootout, where Kokkinos’ penalty was saved and Connor Pye scored the decisive kick.

How Did Prescot Cables Approach the Tie?

Prescot Cables entered the match after progressing through the previous round on penalties. The National League reported that Cables drew 1-1 with Hallam in third-round qualifying, with Che Trappaso-Tully cancelling out Leon Howarth’s opener before Steven Daley’s side won the shootout 4-2.

Before the game, Cables manager Steven Daley had spoken about his side’s FA Trophy ambitions. As reported by Off The Park, Cables had reached the second round in the previous season, where they lost narrowly at Macclesfield.

The visitors arrived at Gigg Lane following two defeats and a draw, according to Off The Park. Despite the eventual 3-0 scoreline, they created several notable chances, particularly during the first half, when Murphy, Donaldson and Deans all tested the Bury defence.

What Was the Match Conditions and Setting?

The match was played at Gigg Lane, Bury’s home ground, in rainy and windy conditions, according to the Bury Times. Weather data listed for the fixture recorded rain and a temperature of around 9.6°C.

Bury’s official club listing identified the fixture as an FA Trophy first round proper match at the Salford Van Hire Gigg Lane Stadium, scheduled for 24 October 2026 at 3pm.

The conditions did not prevent Bury from playing an attacking game, with the Bury Times reporting that the hosts controlled much of the second half through their possession play.

Background of the Development

The FA Trophy is an annual knockout competition for clubs in the non-league system, with the 2026-27 edition known for sponsorship reasons as the Isuzu FA Trophy. It is the 58th edition of the competition and features teams from levels five to eight of the English football pyramid.

Bury entered this season’s competition for only the second time, according to FA Cup Factfile, while Prescot Cables were competing in their 31st FA Trophy campaign. The same preview noted that Cables were aiming to match their previous season’s run to the second round.

Bury had already needed penalties to advance in the previous round, beating Gainsborough Trinity 6-5 from the spot after a 3-3 draw. Prescot Cables, managed by Steven Daley, had also progressed via penalties after a 1-1 draw with Hallam.

The first-round draw was made on 28 September 2026, with the round scheduled for Saturday, 24 October 2026. Bury’s victory means they will now take their place in the second round, while Prescot Cables’ campaign ends at the first-round stage.

Prediction: How Can This Development Affect Bury Fans?

For Bury supporters, the result provides a straightforward boost in the FA Trophy: the club is through to the second round without needing another penalty shootout. The performance also offered game time to several squad and academy-linked players, including Igbinoghene, Aydogan, Aubrey-Williams and Cox, which may be relevant as the season progresses.

Fans are likely to watch the second-round draw closely, as a favourable tie could give Bury another opportunity to build momentum in the competition. The clean sheet and three-goal margin may also reassure supporters after the tension of the previous round’s late collapse against Gainsborough Trinity, when Bury conceded twice in stoppage time before winning on penalties.

For Prescot Cables supporters, the defeat ends this season’s Trophy interest at the first round, despite a competitive first-half showing. The club had reached the second round last season, and this result means they will not match that run in the 2026-27 competition.
