Executive leaves following Completion of Strategic Objectives
Michael Edwards has stepped down from his position as Chief Executive of Football at Fenway Football Group (FSG), ending his second spell with Liverpool’s ownership group after two years in the role.
FSG confirmed that Edwards departure was part of a planned transition following the completion of key strategic priorities. Group President Mike Gordon acknowledged the significance of the departure, stating that the ownership group was “naturally disappointed” to see Edwards leave.
Edwards returned to Liverpool’s football structure in March 2024 on a three-year contract to oversee the club’s football operations and guide the organization through the post Jurgen Klopp era.
Edwards Reflects on Liverpool’s Future
In a farewell statement, Edwards expressed confidence in the club’s direction, highlighting the strength of its leadership and long-term planning.
He said Liverpool remains in a strong position, with experienced personnel, a clear strategic vision and solid foundations for continued success. Edwards also noted that his role extended beyond Liverpool, as he was tasked with helping shape FSG’s broader football ambitions although those plans ultimately evolved differently from the original version.
Despite those changes, he said he was proud of the work carried out by his team in presenting ownership with a wide range of strategic options for the future.
Major Sporting Challenges Await the Club
Liverpool now faces several important decisions ahead of the new season. One of the most significant challenges will be replacing Egyptian forward Mohamed Salah, who departed at the conclusion of the previous campaign after years as the club’s leading attacking figure.
Reports have also linked Sporting Director Richard Hughes with a possible departure, creating additional uncertainty within Liverpool’s football leadership.
Edwards’ Legacy at Liverpool
Edwards first joined Liverpool in 2011 before becoming Sporting Director in 2016. During his tenure, he earned widespread recognition for his data-driven recruitment strategy and his success in the transfer market.
His influence helped bring several key players to uk/local/anfield/">Anfield including Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mané , Andy Robertson and Virgil van Dijk. Those signings formed the core of the squad that ended Liverpool’s 30-year wait for a top-flight league title by winning the Premier League in 2020
Following Klopp’s departure, Arne Slot guided Liverpool to the Premier League title in his first season in charge during the 2024 – 2025 campaign. However, an underwhelming follow-up season resulted in his replacement by Andoni Iraola, marking another chapter in the club’s ongoing evolution under FSG ownership
