Liverpool have announced the statement signing of Bradley Barcola for £123 million from Paris Saint Germain- but who exactly is The Reds’ newest star, and what can we expect from him?
The 23-year-old Frenchman primarily plays on the left-wing but is comfortable in any position across a front three.
Progressing through the ranks of Lyon’s academy, the winger spent two seasons with Les Gones before signing for PSG for £38.5 million in 2023.
Barcola spent two years in the capital, playing 88 times and scoring 29 goals.
His standout season in France came in 2024/25, where he tallied 21 goals and 18 assists in a season where PSG became the first French team ever to win a continental treble.
In total, he won three Ligue 1 titles, two Champions Leagues, two Coupe de Frances, the UEFA Super Cup and the Fifa Intercontinental Cup with PSG.
Off the back of winning back-to-back Champions League titles, Barcola joins a Liverpool team in need of a new-look attack.
He brings pace, intelligence and relentless intensity, to a frontline that has looked flat since the departures of Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah.
He is most effective when running in behind the opposition defence and does so constantly both on the inside and outside of the defending full-back.
This player profile is an essential part of Andoni Iraola’s attacking system, and Barcola’s new manager will look to use his distinct attacking qualities to get the best out of both Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak.
As we saw against Newcastle in particular, Wirtz struggled to link with Liverpool’s attackers as there was a distinct lack of direct off-the-ball runs from The Reds’ attackers.
Against Nottingham Forest however, Wirtz looked a lot more assured in his central attacking midfield role with Victor Munoz, who he assisted for Liverpool’s equaliser, as an option on the right-hand side.
Munoz is a similar player to Barcola, both using pacy, forward runs combined with astute attacking intelligence to cause problems for opposition defences.
The Frenchman will also provide some extra quality in delivery from wide areas, an area in which Liverpool’s advanced full backs have disappointed fans with this season.
In summary, with Barcola, Liverpool now have a world-class wide player who can unlock the qualities of Florian Wirtz, provide elite-level service to Alexander Isak, and provide a deadly goal threat from wide areas.
While questions remain over Liverpool’s overall squad depth, Andoni Iraola will be happy that the club has spent big money on a player who may prove to be the missing piece in The Reds’ attack.
