As reported by News & Star, a TJ Hughes spokesperson confirmed that the store is due to open before the end of November. The spokesperson said:

“TJ Hughes is coming to Egremont and we hope it is to the delight of local shoppers. Moving into the Original Factory Shop unit, the store is due to open before the end of November, which means Egremont’s Christmas shopping options just got even better.”

The announcement was first made by Egremont Town Council in a Facebook post, which said TJ Hughes was advertising for a store manager for its new Egremont location. The council added that the national retailer was rumoured to be taking over the former “plastic site” and said the move “would be great for the Town”.

What Will the New TJ Hughes Store Sell?

The Egremont store will offer a broad value-retail range, including fashion, beauty products, homeware, pet care and everyday goods.

TJ Hughes is a discount department-store brand originally founded in Liverpool. Its product offering is designed to provide customers with access to affordable household and personal goods, according to the company’s public statements reported by News & Star.

The retailer has not published a precise opening date, an address confirmation or details of opening hours in the available announcements. However, both TJ Hughes and the landlord’s agent have indicated that the opening is planned for November, ahead of the Christmas trading period.

How Many Jobs Will TJ Hughes Create in Egremont?

TJ Hughes is recruiting up to 15 members of staff for the Egremont store.

Jason Harmer, chief operating officer of TJ Hughes, said the recruitment formed part of the retailer’s broader expansion. He said:

“We are recruiting up to 15 members of staff for the new store, and this move is part of the broader growth of the TJ Hughes estate.”

Mr Harmer also welcomed the location, saying:

“Egremont is a fantastic location with a great community reputation and we are opening in a site that has served the town well for several years so we believe this move will be good for both the town and for our brand.”

He added:

“Coming to Egremont, which is a new location for our brand, is something we’re really excited about.”

Why Is TJ Hughes Taking Over the Former Original Factory Shop?

The store will occupy the former The Original Factory Shop unit in Egremont.

Carigiet Cowen, which acted for the landlord, said it secured a new lease to TJ Hughes for the former TOFS premises. The commercial property firm described the building as “a modern warehouse with a large car park” and said interest in the site had been strong from the outset.

Ben Blain, a director at Carigiet Cowen, said: “Interest for this building was good from the off. It’s a modern warehouse with a large car park and would have worked for various uses. We were delighted when a national retailer like TJ Hughes came along, as TOFS was a very busy shop for the town.”

Mr Blain added: “So being able to put something back in to the building which is a similar offering is great for the town of Egremont and the surrounding area.”

Carigiet Cowen said TJ Hughes intended to open in mid-to-late November, “just in time for Christmas”.

What Happened to The Original Factory Shop in Egremont?

The Original Factory Shop entered administration in January 2026. As reported by Yahoo Finance, administrators from Interpath Advisory were appointed, placing the future of 137 stores and 1,180 staff at risk.

At the time, the Egremont branch was listed among The Original Factory Shop’s UK locations. The administrators said they would work to operate the stores as a going concern while assessing options for the business.

The arrival of TJ Hughes therefore provides a new national-retail occupier for a prominent former TOFS site in the town. Carigiet Cowen said the former TOFS shop had been “a very busy shop for the town”, and described the replacement tenant as a similar retail offering.

Is This Part of TJ Hughes’ Expansion?

Yes. Mr Harmer described the Egremont opening as “an important step” for TJ Hughes and said it was part of the company’s broader estate growth.

Carigiet Cowen said TJ Hughes currently trades from 18 stores nationwide and is expanding. The firm said it was “delighted” to have secured a Cumbrian location for the retailer.

The Egremont site will be a new location for the TJ Hughes brand, according to Mr Harmer.

Background of the Development

TJ Hughes is a Liverpool-founded discount department-store retailer. The company has been growing its store estate since 2023, with new branches and relocations contributing to its expansion, according to its publicly available corporate history.

The Egremont development follows the administration of The Original Factory Shop in January 2026. The discount chain appointed Interpath Advisory as administrators after citing difficult trading conditions, and its Egremont store was among the locations listed at the time.

The former TOFS unit has now been let to TJ Hughes through Carigiet Cowen, which acted for the landlord. The agent said the building’s modern warehouse format, large car park and previous success as a busy town-centre store made it attractive to potential occupiers.

Prediction: What Could This Mean for Egremont Shoppers and Local Businesses?

For Egremont shoppers, the opening is likely to restore a large-format discount retail option in the town before the Christmas period. TJ Hughes’ range of fashion, beauty, homeware, pet care and everyday goods may give residents a broader local choice without needing to travel to larger retail centres.

For local jobseekers, the recruitment of up to 15 staff could provide new retail employment opportunities, including a store-management role advertised before the formal confirmation of the opening.

For surrounding businesses, a national retailer occupying a previously vacant or uncertain former TOFS unit may increase footfall in Egremont, particularly during the festive shopping season. The landlord’s agent said the building had a large car park and had previously hosted a busy store, suggesting the site could again become a significant local retail destination.

The main uncertainty remains the exact opening date. TJ Hughes has said “before the end of November”, while Carigiet Cowen has indicated mid-to-late November; shoppers should therefore expect confirmation closer to the launch.
