Get in, Liverpool – the critically acclaimed musical Mean Girls is finally heading to the Liverpool Empire for the very first time. The West End smash-hit musical will arrive at the historic Lime Street venue for a two-week run this October. Performances of the award-winning production are scheduled from Monday 19 October to Saturday 31 October 2026, for a total of sixteen high-energy, unmissable shows.

Adding an extra touch of pride to the production, Brookside star and Liverpool-born actress Jennifer Ellison will play Ms Heron/Ms Norbury/Mrs George. This is set to be an emotional run for the 43-year-old, as she says:

“Bringing it home to Liverpool will be the cherry on top! Performing in my hometown is going to be such a special moment. I’m ready for the pink, the drama and a proper Liverpool welcome. I cannot wait!”

Adapted from the iconic 2004 teen comedy written by Tina Fey – which won seven major awards out of 25 nominations – the Mean Girls stage adaptation has already attracted positive reviews during its West End residency. Praised by critics during its national tour for its “big pop energy and sharp choreography” (Manchester Theatres) and hailed as “funny, polished and unapologetically feel-good” (I LOVE MCR), the show promises to bring high-quality entertainment straight to Merseyside.

The plot

After moving from Kenya to Chicago, Cady Heron tries to fit in at high school with the help of outsiders Janis and Damian. She is soon taken under the wing of the three most popular girls in the school, “The Plastics”, led by the manipulative and ruthless Regina George. An agreement is made to spy on the clique and sabotage Regina from within, but Cady gradually transforms into the very mean girl she wanted to destroy. Her growing arrogance alienates her true friends and drives away the boy she likes, Aaron. When Regina discovers the plot, she exposes the vicious “Burn Book” and the school descends into total chaos.

Realising how far she has fallen, Cady takes the blame, redeems herself and rebuilds her relationships on honest foundations.

Whether you are a lifelong fan of the original movie or looking to experience high-octane musical theatre in your city, Mean Girls promises to be one of Liverpool’s highlights this season.
