As reported by the Liverpool Echo, shoppers will be able to use 2,000 free travel and parking tickets across the four Sundays before Christmas. The initiative will also include rail, bus and ferry offers, although the exact details of those transport discounts have not been set out in the announcement.

The scheme is called Get In! and is funded and organised by Liverpool Business Improvement District. Its stated purpose is to make journeys into the city centre more affordable during the festive period, helping shoppers support local businesses while managing Christmas costs.

How Many Free Parking Tickets Will Be Available?

A total of 500 free travel and parking tickets will be available on each of four Sundays: Sunday, November 29; Sunday, December 6; Sunday, December 13; and Sunday, December 20. That makes 2,000 tickets across the four dates.

According to the Liverpool Echo, tickets can be booked from 10am on Friday, November 20, via the Liverpool BID Company website. People can also sign up in advance to be among the first to access the tickets when bookings open.

The free or discounted travel and parking offer has been arranged through a partnership between Liverpool BID, Liverpool City Region Combined Authority, Merseyrail, Stagecoach, Liverpool City Council, St Johns Shopping Centre and city centre car parks.

Why Has Liverpool BID Launched the Scheme?

Liverpool BID chief executive Bill Addy said the organisation represents more than 865 businesses across Liverpool city centre and understands the importance of Christmas to the local economy.

As reported by the Liverpool Echo, Mr Addy said:

“It’s the biggest time of the year for high streets and hospitality, and after a tough few years a lot of our smaller businesses are really relying on that crucial Q4 period.”

He added that many households remain under cost-of-living pressure and said Get In! was designed to make that pressure “a little easier”.

“Christmas shopping often means relying on the car, especially if you’re buying big purchases, but these parking deals will make it a little more affordable,”

Mr Addy said.

He also said Liverpool City Region, Merseyrail and Stagecoach were supporting public transport offers to make it easier for people to travel into the city during the festive season.

What Does the Offer Include?

The confirmed offer covers free travel and parking tickets, with 500 available on each participating Sunday. The announcement also refers to rail, bus and ferry offers, although it does not specify how many discounted fares will be available or which routes will be included.

Liverpool BID has said the scheme is intended to support both drivers and public transport users. The involvement of Merseyrail and Stagecoach indicates that the initiative extends beyond city-centre parking, while the participation of St Johns Shopping Centre and city centre car parks points to parking support within the city centre.

Merseyrail separately operates more than 40 free park-and-ride car parks across its network, with services running every 15 minutes between 7am and 7pm on Mondays and Saturdays on all lines except the Ellesmere Port line. The Get In! announcement does not state whether those existing park-and-ride facilities form part of the new Christmas offer.

When Will Liverpool’s Christmas Lights Be Switched On?

Liverpool city centre’s Christmas lights are due to be switched on on Thursday, November 12.

The lights announcement comes alongside the parking and travel scheme. According to the Liverpool Echo, more than 85% of Liverpool’s Christmas lights are funded by Liverpool BID, with businesses investing more than £1.2 million in festive lights across the city centre over the past five years.

Liverpool BID has also stated that it funds 85% of the city centre’s Christmas lights and decorations in 2026. Its Christmas page says the organisation has contributed more than £745,000 to city-centre Christmas decorations and activities over the past five years, although that figure differs from the £1.2 million business investment figure cited by the Liverpool Echo for festive lights specifically.

What Happens Next?

The next confirmed date for shoppers is Friday, November 20, when ticket bookings open at 10am through the Liverpool BID Company website.

The first date on which the 500 free travel and parking tickets can be used is Sunday, November 29. The remaining dates are December 6, December 13 and December 20.

No information has been released about eligibility restrictions, the specific car parks included, whether tickets are limited to one per person, or how long the free parking period lasts on each Sunday. Those details were not included in the announcement reported by the Liverpool Echo.

Background of the Development

Liverpool Business Improvement District is a business-led organisation representing more than 865 city-centre businesses. Its Get In! scheme forms part of a wider festive programme intended to make Liverpool city centre more accessible and affordable during the Christmas period.

The announcement follows continued pressure on household budgets and on town and city-centre retail and hospitality businesses. Mr Addy said smaller businesses in particular were relying on the final quarter of the year, which includes the Christmas trading period.

The scheme also sits alongside Liverpool’s wider Christmas offer. The city centre’s Christmas lights are due to be switched on on November 12, and Liverpool BID says it funds the majority of the city centre’s festive lighting.

Prediction: How This Can Affect Shoppers and Businesses

For shoppers, the scheme is likely to make four pre-Christmas Sundays cheaper for people who would otherwise drive into Liverpool city centre. Those who secure one of the 500 daily tickets may be able to reduce parking costs, while the associated public transport offers could provide an alternative for visitors travelling by rail, bus or ferry.

For city-centre retailers, cafés, restaurants and other hospitality venues, the initiative could bring additional footfall on the four selected Sundays. Because the tickets are limited to 500 per Sunday, demand may be concentrated among early bookers, and the scheme’s wider effect will depend on how many people use the tickets and whether they spend in the city centre.

For drivers, the main practical impact will depend on the parking locations and booking terms, which have not yet been published. Shoppers planning to use the offer should monitor the Liverpool BID Company website before November 20, when bookings open.

For public transport users, the involvement of Merseyrail and Stagecoach suggests that the scheme may encourage some visitors to leave the car at home. However, the precise discounts and conditions have not been confirmed, so travellers should check official operator information closer to the travel dates.
