As reported by the Liverpool ECHO, Merseyside Police were called following a report at around 10.30pm on Tuesday, October 20, that a man had assaulted a security guard outside the Santander branch on Chapel Street. Officers said the man then took a cash box and left the area on foot.

The alleged attack happened outside the bank branch in Southport town centre. Police later placed a cordon outside the premises while inquiries continued.

Was anyone injured in the Southport bank incident?

The security guard sustained a minor facial injury, according to information reported by the Liverpool ECHO. No further details about the guard’s condition or whether hospital treatment was required were included in the police account published by the newspaper.

The suspect was reported to have fled on foot after taking the cash box. Merseyside Police have not been quoted as giving a description of the suspect, confirming an arrest, or saying how much money was in the cash box.

Why did police cordon off the bank?

A photograph seen by the Liverpool ECHO showed police tape outside the Santander branch at 6.30am on Wednesday, October 21. A van was also pictured parked outside the bank.

The cordon indicated that officers were continuing to examine the scene after the overnight incident. Police have described the investigation as being in its early stages.

What have police said about the Southport attack?

Detective Inspector Sara Lang appealed for witnesses and asked people in the area to review any recordings that may have captured the incident.

As reported by the Liverpool ECHO, Detective Inspector Sara Lang said:

“We are in the early stages of the investigation and are keen to speak to anyone who may have saw the incident.

“If you live in the area or were driving past at the time, please check you CCTV or dashcam footage for anything that might help with our inquiries. The smallest detail could be the key to finding the person responsible.”

How can witnesses contact Merseyside Police?

Merseyside Police asked anyone with information to contact its social media desk through X or Facebook at @MerPolCC.

Information can also be reported through the Merseyside Police website or by calling 101, quoting incident reference 26000863385.

People who wish to remain anonymous can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or through its website. In an emergency, the public is advised to call 999.

Background of the development

The reported incident took place outside a Santander branch on Chapel Street, a central shopping street in Southport. Police said the alleged assault and theft of a cash box occurred late on Tuesday evening, with the cordon still visible the following morning.

The case remains at an early investigative stage. At the time of reporting, Merseyside Police had appealed for CCTV, dashcam and witness information rather than confirming any arrest or naming a suspect.

How could this affect Southport residents and businesses?

For people living or working near Chapel Street, the police cordon may have caused temporary disruption around the Santander branch while officers carried out inquiries. Residents and drivers may be asked to check private CCTV or dashcam footage from Tuesday night.

For local businesses and bank customers, the development highlights the importance of reporting suspicious activity promptly and preserving any relevant footage. Anyone with information can assist Merseyside Police by contacting the force through its official channels, calling 101 with the incident reference, or contacting Crimestoppers anonymously.
