Birkenhead (Liverpool Standard) February 10, 2026 – Construction work has started on a new Sainsbury’s Local store in Wirral Waters, marking a key milestone in the area’s regeneration.
The 4,300 sq ft waterfront supermarket is being built next to Peel Waters’ Millers Quay development, which comprises 500 fully occupied apartments, and within walking distance of East Float Quay and Redbridge Quay residents. According to Birkenhead News and The Guide Liverpool, the store will provide essential convenience shopping and new jobs for the local community, operating daily from 7am to 11pm.
What does the new store offer?
The store will feature a curated selection of high-quality food including daily baked bread and pastries, fresh fruit and vegetables, meat, fish, and meal solutions. It includes a free cash machine and serves as a collection point for Argos, Tu clothing, and Habitat orders, enhancing convenience for residents and visitors in the growing neighbourhood.
As reported by Tony McDonough of LBN Daily, the project follows council approval and aligns with the £130m Millers Quay residential scheme, where 100 apartments are designated as affordable housing at up to 80% of market rent.
How does this fit into Wirral Waters regeneration?
The development forms part of Peel Waters’ ambitious brownfield regeneration at Wirral Waters, creating vibrant communities with amenities on residents’ doorsteps. Richard Mawdsley, director of development at Wirral Waters, stated:
“We’re really pleased to celebrate the start of this build as it will bring an important amenity and new jobs to the heart of this brand new neighbourhood.”
What sustainability measures are included?
In line with Wirral Waters’ environmental standards, the store will run on 100% renewable electricity with full LED lighting throughout. Construction will engage students from Wirral Met College, continuing their involvement from the Millers Quay project, as noted by The Business Desk and The Guide Liverpool.
What have local leaders said?
Cllr Paula Basnett, leader of Wirral Council, welcomed the investment, saying:
“It’s fantastic to see yet more investment coming into Wirral Waters, bringing new services and amenities right into the heart of this growing neighbourhood.”
David Pilbeam, Sainsbury’s director of acquisitions, capital projects and engineering, added:
“We’re delighted that plans for our new store at Millers Quay have been approved, bringing us one step closer to delivering a fantastic new Sainsbury’s Local for the community.”
The project signals ongoing progress in Wirral’s docklands, with the first supermarket arriving to support the expanding residential population.
